Linear Panorama

Can APP produce some linear panoramas?

Look here for a example.

Hugin seems to be able to do it, but I would prefer APP.

Did I read "gurl" in the link's name smile

Re: Linear Panorama

Yes, just add your images then set the lens focal length to 1000 or so.

Re: Linear Panorama

chouette,  I  knew them before I posted.

eh bien, it says "manually stitched" on one of the sites; really??
It's clear to me that they are tricky, especilally with roofs and streets.

How much of overlapping did you used for these? 50 %

What counts is the "linear distance" between shots: the lower the distance the more easy the seams placement (less parallax changes.) The distance I used for la préfecture de Grenoble was much too large. Chimneys and tiled roofs are not recommendable!

Other important points are the camera orientation (should be constant - I tested using a compass - found it don't work) and the distance between the camera and the buildings (I used the sidewalk as a reference - it was OK.)

Intersting test: which among the blenders is the best for that? (manual blending of a large amount of views is very tedious!)

Re: Linear Panorama

Bonsoir Georges

I suppose, the biggest possible distance to the subject is a advantage; and correction of the lens distortion (in PS later) as well.
As for the cam's orientation, you could use a laser from a do-it-store, with levels ..

Blenders: did you used APP for that work?
I don't want to think about layermasks in PS ;-)

What do you think, would it be possible to capture the following situation in a linear stitch - avoiding the columns (Säule) on the final image?
I think more shots than the plan shows are required , and the cam should be further away from the object, the red wall.

Re: Linear Panorama

APP didn't exist yet (I'm not sure about Enblend) and this is something where I had to learn how to use layers, masks and some other related PS nice tools.

The best advice: plan several attempts, not a single one.

I would recommend using small JPEG or "RAW+small JPEG" to find out where the most difficult problems are (if the red wall is the only subject and is flat, then this pano should be easy, provided camera placement and orientation are precise enough.)

Re: Linear Panorama

Georges, thanks for your advises.

I have been going through all these pages, already, but very hard to find infos about a howto. Rather sort of giant bricolage.roll

The 2nd option would be to create 3 linear, "conventional" stiches (in APP) , and mounting them in PS, later; I prefer this one, at the moment:

Re: Linear Panorama

How do you set the focal length to 1000 ? I could not find the option to override the Exif data.

In Groups View, prior to panorama detection, select images, click Properties, edit what you need...

Could you give a more detailed procedure ?

Re: Linear Panorama

I have a street image like this in an exhibition now. The street is narrow, only 7 meter an I shot with a 3 m monopod on centre of all buildings and just made the montage of flat projections in photoshop with blend between the houses....

Re: Linear Panorama

[bo] a small puzzle about what version you are using: I notice that, in your screen shot, the highlighted focal length shows the length as 25,00mm - i.e. in the continental format, but the detail of focal lengths uses the 'english' format 25.00

Re: Linear Panorama

Nanard, could you, by any chance, be using some very old Autopano Pro version, like 1.3 or something like that? Check the title bar in the first screenshot and note the version number - 1.4 RC1.

leedsjoe, this could be a result from the Regional and Language control panel settings? Everything set to Bulgarian there. The decimal symbol is , (comma), not . (period).

Je suis sur que si tu n'utilises pas de fisheye, la version qui est la plus sure, est encore la 1.30 Alpha2, jamais mise en ligne comme une version aboutie…

Re: Linear Panorama

Here is a similar one : 70 x 6Mp images sides by side to produce a 0.37 gigapixels graffitti wall. The best is to look at it at

http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=891

My big issue is (Alexandre, are you around :-) the weave , even if I used a tripod and quite a regular spacing between the shoots. I tried various optimisations without any luck and had lots of cropping issues, especially on the right side of the panorama.

Re: Linear Panorama

Beeloba, thanks for the info, but I need to edit the Exif focal length which, I know now, has been provided since 131 alpha 1. APP 140 RC1 looks pretty stable, isn't ?

Re: Linear Panorama

Great work pvk!
I'm trying to make such linear panorama, but I have some difficulties: I shoot with a fisheye, but it was impossible to stitch. So I "defish" (or "unfifsh"???) each picture, create an alpha channel to mask the black areas. Then, I open the pictures in APP and then ... the result was not better sad
Finally, I shoot with a rectilinear lens (a 18mm), the result is "correct" and need a lot of work in Photoshop.

Could it be possible, in the future, to make the creation of a linear panorama much easier? And could it be possible to "defish" the pictures directly in APP?

I found an article about such software:
http://research.microsoft.com/~cohen/LongThings.pdf

The same text in french (with less speling mistakes wink):
------
Joli travail pvk!

http://research.microsoft.com/~cohen/LongThings.pdf

I seem to recall other posts on this issue.

I believe it requires a form of projection - orthographic? - not currently supported by APP or many other stitchers.

http://www.connorphotography.net/orthographic.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orthographic_projection

http://www.autopano.net/wiki/Understand … ting_Modes
"Other stitching models are possible and will soon be supported by Autopano Pro. The most popular is the Orthogonal, also called Orthographic stitching. All the source images are shot orthogonally to the same plane. Instead of rotating around its center, the camera is following a linear motion path, always pointing in the same direction. This is exactly what is being done when scanning a A3 size sheet of paper with a letter size scanner. We end up with 4 or 5 files assembled using this stitching model. It is also what happens when taking pictures of building fronts in a street by walking down the street and taking a picture facing the buildings every 10 steps."
