papy as iphone app / check this out

hi there

i am interested in getting a merlin or similar motorized solution. but i am not a DIY man. as i read, the bt-remote module is beiing revamped and available shortly. i am willing to pay more for a turnkey and complete solution. (but not the rodeon...). i have not found a clear statement, whether pw will be available as an iphone app or not.

browing thru the itunes appstore, i found this:

http://star-map.fr/equinox.html

that would be the killer application, are there any chances someting like this could be developed? with the release of iphone os 3.0, much more interactions with external hardware are delivered to the developers.

gerry

There are now two BT ready-assembled modules available. Both plug-n-play with the non-GoTo model of the Merlin/Orion mount which has the camera port. A third variant will be available soon for the GoTo version of the mount which lacks a camera port.

I have not found a clear statement, whether pw will be available as an iphone app or not.

AFAIK there are no plans to develop a version of Papywizard for the iPhone.

Papywizard will run on Nokia N800 and N810 Internet Tablets, Windows XP and Vista, OSX 10.5 or later and Linux.

Last month I read something about an iPhone Application for remote camera control, maybe you like it: http://jkontherun.com/2009/05/22/iphone-dslr-remote/

Re: papy as iphone app / check this out

To develop under iphone, you have to use Objective-C, and I don't plan to learn another C-based language!

Once you start using python, coming back to such low-level language is really a pain in the ass hmm

Re: papy as iphone app / check this out

thank you guys, for the fast feedback

are you all using the merlin/papy at the moment?

@andrew: thx for the bt-module info

@arhornero: thx, seen this too, but only works with a (wifi)-canon - at the moment

@fréderic: i perfectly understand you from the sw-developers view... you are the pay-master, and that guy who built starmap, frederic deschamps, is the iphone-master. i was very impressed to see his app moving and controlling the telescope. as you both are french, the common language would be given. maybe, someday, you join for a project...

greetinx,
gerry

btw: did you know that there are pano/stichers available for the iphone? i will test some of them, like PANO, AUTOSTICH, TRIPSTICH

Re: papy as iphone app / check this out

Funny you mention Frédéric Descamps, because we work in the same research center, and do more or less the same job (but we don't have the same employer, and he has a much bigger team in charge than I have) wink

I was aware of its recent Startmap developement, but didn't know that it was driving telescope; I though it was only a stellar map... Next time I see him at the coffee machine, I will disuss with him.

Re: papy as iphone app / check this out

Hey Gerry, this was my first thought too, but what if you get a call during shooting..
The cheapest and safest way is to get a Nokia N800 for 100-120 euro from Ebay and run PW 1.6+ and more.
Just see the Nokia as a remote control, nothing more or less.
This Nokia fits in the bag with your lenses, rails and Merlin and once running, you can call, listen music, checking mail, browse etc. on the iPhone.
(yep I have one)

Re: papy as iphone app / check this out

yeah, i understand that. but as far as i have seen, an incoming call does not kill a running app, you press ignore, or its deviated to your mailbox and the phone returns to the running app.

and you can always redirect all calls. i would not mind if i had to do that, if only papy would run in the iphone...

Re: papy as iphone app / check this out

I agree that the iPhone is a nice device: nice screen, big size... Too bad Apple does not better support open community.

There are more and more devices arround; if each one implements its own way of development, it will be very difficult to support them.

Python/Qt is really easy to use, and should be a default choice for developement tools wink

Re: papy as iphone app / check this out

Any chance of ever getting it to run under Android?  Eventually I'll wind up getting a nokia..but I'm a month or two away from the end of my cell phone plan so that will be first.  lol.

Re: papy as iphone app / check this out

Always the same story: if python/qt exists on this plateform, it will be easy to adapt Papywizard. But as far as I understand, Android uses its own GUI toolkit roll

That one's no use, unfortunately. You need the camera to be tehered to a notebook to use it. And if you have a notebook tethered to the camera you usually wouldn't need the IPhone anymore to control the pano-head.

Yes, you are right, but I consider it is a curious choice.

Thanks, Alberto.

Re: papy as iphone app / check this out

I saw Frédéric Descamps, this morning: he confirmed that the only way to develop under iPhone is to use Objective-C. There is no plan to port Qt: Apple locks all that stuff yikes(

And Frédéric is not interested to port Papywizard (he has enough work with Starmap, and is more concered by astronomical photography).

Re: papy as iphone app / check this out

merçi, frédéric - it was worth a try. i completely understand you (and him) from the developers point of view.

i adore his application, starmap pro is a really nice app. so, i will then look around for a used nokia... and hopefully soon i can use another very fine app: papywizard. thanks again,
gerry
